Jacob's Choice

A skit about taking responsibility for our actions

Characters: Mom (voice only)

                   Jacob

                   Angel

                   Demon

Cut lights, sound of breaking glass, lights come on

on Jacob standing center stage looking nervous

Mom: (yelling from offstage) Jacob Daniel Eugene Michael Randolph Gregory Peter Robert!  What happened to my vase from France?

Lights off, spotlight on

Jacob: (talking to audience) Moms told me and my brothers a million times not to play Uno in the house.  She says we get too wound up.  (sighs, hangs head)

Demon: (enters from door, takes position behind Jacob on Jacobs left) Your mom sounded really mad this time.

Jacob: No kidding.  Half those middle names werent mine.

Demon: I noticed.  Some of them were the kids next door, and I think those last three are from the Brady Bunch.

Jacob: Shes gonna kill me!

Demon: Nah, not quite.  Just seriously injure.  If she were going to kill you, some of the

Partridge familys kids name would have been in there too.

Jacob: Thanks so much for you sympathy.

Demon: Hey, its not my strong suit.

Angel: (enters from choir loft area, takes position behind Jacob on Jacobs right, places a hand on Jacobs shoulder) What are you going to do?

Jacob: Im not sure what should I do?

Angel: You know the right thing would be to

Demon: (interrupts) Blame your brother!  If Sam hadnt laid that draw four on you, you wouldnt be in this mess!  Its all his fault!  You dont deserve the heat for what happened!

Angel: You shouldnt have been playing that game in the house after your mom told you not to.  You chose to disobey her, and now you need to

Demon: (interrupting again) let her know it was a stupid rule to begin with!  Its only a game, you should be able to play it wherever you want.  Besides, did she really say not to play it in the house or did she really mean the family room?

Angel: Its a perfectly reasonable rule.  She doesnt even have that many when you realize how much she does for you every day.

Demon: Like what?  Shes constantly on your case about making your bed.  Whats the point?  Youre going to sleep in it again in a few hours anyway

Angel: (interrupting) Youre doing this. (makes talking motions with hand)  I want you to do this. (hand is still)

Demon: (dejected, crosses arms and pouts)

Angel: You know the right thing to do would be to tell the truth.  Sure, shell be mad, but she loves you and it will be good for both of you in the long run.

Jacob: (sighs) Youre right.  (stands)  Hey, mom ?
